Vehicle Age

The average age of vehicles in the USA is 12.5 years as of January 2023, a trend that has a greater demand for repair work. Replacement parts and skilled mechanics are in short supply. Thus, the probability of mechanical defects increase along with accidents.

Tires

Per Forbes Advisor, there were 1,593,390 accidents that resulted in injuries in the United States in 2020. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its 2020 annual traffic crash data, showing that 38,824 lives were lost in traffic crashes nationwide.

Ward & Barnes research indicates vehicle defects lead to 10% of vehicle accidents. Some of the most common vehicle defects that can cause accidents include faulty parts or malfunctioning electrical systems.

According to web search results, every seven seconds, there is a tire puncture in the United States, resulting in about 220 million flat tires per year. Flat tires account for 25% of highway accidents. Statics show a driver will experience five flat tires in a lifetime.

Of the 1,593,390 crashes in 2020, 159,339 (10%) were due to mechanical problems and of those were tire issues that accounted for 39,835 (25%). Of the 38,824 lives lost, 970 (1/40) were due to tire related defects.

Fluid leak

The most common fluids that leak from a vehicle are water, oil, coolant or antifreeze, transmission fluid, gear oil or differential fluid, and power-steering fluid

According to web search results, oil leaks are a very common problem that affects many vehicle owners. They are caused by failed engine gaskets and worn O-rings and seals that shrink and harden due to age, heat, and pressure. Some common sources of oil leaks are the oil pan drain plug, oil filter or rocker (valve) cover gaskets.

Oil leaks can damage an engine by reducing the lubrication of the moving parts, increasing wear and tear, and causing overheating. They can also pollute the environment by contaminating the soil and water with toxic substances. Oil leaks can also pose a fire hazard if they come into contact with hot surfaces or sparks.

Broken light

One source estimate that one in seven motorists is driving around with a potentially serious issue in their vehicle, such as burnt-out headlights or fluid leaks.

Driving with broken lights is not only dangerous but also costly for drivers. Therefore, it is advisable to fix any broken lights as soon as possible and avoid driving at night or in low-visibility conditions until then.

One source says that there were 286.9 million registered vehicles in 2020 in the USA. This number may not reflect the actual number of vehicles on the road at any given time, as some vehicles may be inactive or unregistered. However, it does indicate that there are a lot of vehicles in the country and that driving with broken lights could affect many people.

Lights

There is no exact number of how many batteries are drained when parking lights are left on, as it depends on various factors such as the power consumption of the lights, the battery capacity and charge level, and the ambient temperature. However, some estimates suggest that it can take about 14 hours to drain a fully charged 50 Ah car battery to 50% of its capacity if the parking lights consume 20 watts of power. The duration can be shorter if the battery is partially charged or aging. Parking lights are meant to indicate the presence of your vehicle when parked in dark areas. They use less power than headlights, but they can still drain your battery if left on for too long.

Fender benders

There is no definitive data on how many fender benders occur in the USA, as not all fender benders are reported or recorded. However, one estimate is that around 1.7 million rear-end collisions, which are a common type of fender bender, take place in the U.S. each year.

Parking

No one may stop or park along a curb within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, unless there is a licensed driver in the front seat who can move the vehicle if needed.

The penalty for parking in front of a fire hydrant varies depending on the state, city, or country where you are. However, you can expect to face some consequences, such as

  • Getting a ticket with a fine that could range from $100 to $500 or more.
  • Having a vehicle towed away and paying additional fees for its release.
  • Having a vehicles’s windows smashed by firefighters who need to run a hose through them.

Parking tickets

According to web search results, there is no definitive data on how many parking tickets are issued every day in the USA. However, some estimates suggest that somewhere between 25 and 50 million traffic tickets (not including parking tickets) are issued each year. That means an average of 68,493 to 136,986 traffic tickets per day.

If we assume that parking tickets are issued at a similar rate as traffic tickets, we can estimate that there are also tens of thousands of parking tickets issued every day in the USA. In fact, one study found that 16 major U.S. cities collected over $1.4 billion in parking ticket revenues annually. That means an average of $3.8 million per day.

Parking tickets can be very costly and frustrating for drivers. The average American gets one parking ticket every five years. Some cities have higher rates of parking tickets than others. For example, New York and Los Angeles top the list with 1.31 and 1.05 parking tickets per year, respectively.

To avoid getting a parking ticket, it is important to follow the parking rules and regulations in your area, pay attention to signs and meters, and check your vehicle for any violations before leaving it parked.
